Sponsored by the Henry Miller Library (http://henrymiller.org), a non-profit arts center in Big Sur, and the Andrea Brown Literary Agency (http://www.andreabrownlit.com/), who has been consistently ranked #1 in juvenile sales in Publishers Marketplace, the Big Sur Writing Workshop is designed for writers with finished or partially-finished manuscripts that need critiquing, revising, and general editorial guidance.
“The children’s writing market – particularly the YA fiction segment – has exploded in the last five years: writers can now actually make a living doing it,” says co-Director Magnus Toren. “The workshop not only helps writers hone their manuscript so it stands out in an increasingly crowded marketplace, but also navigate the complex submission process – and maybe even find a publisher while they’re at it.”
With a low writer-to-faculty ratio, registrants are guaranteed to work closely with at least three different faculty members and participate in three critique groups. As a result, participants find the workshop to be incredibly rewarding.
In addition to six agents from Andrea Brown on hand to scout new talent, this year’s faculty also includes representatives from Chronicle Books, Disney-Hyperion, Viking Children’s Books, and more. Across the past 14 years, the workshop has accumulated dozens of success stories placing registrants with YA agents and publishers.
The weekend package includes the workshop, lodging, meals, and some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery imaginable. The Embassy Suites hotel is easily accessible via Monterey Peninsula, Los Angeles, or San Francisco International Airports.
