The US Government's newly passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes billions of dollars in health information technology incentives for Healthcare IT to dramatically improve their operations. Payments under the Act are graduated in descending amounts from 2011 to 2015, followed by penalties for providers that do not use healthcare IT. The sooner a provider is ready to go with healthcare IT, the better their access will be to the funds and ability to avoid penalties.
For hospitals to qualify for incentives (starting at $2 million annually) providers must have certified electronic health record technology and be able to exchange and integrate electronic health information with other sources. Under the law's stipulations, healthcare IT must prove "meaningful use" and will require integrated applications to capture and report targeted data in order to claim incentives.
As a result, Healthcare organizations are pushing forward in anticipation of the requirements to make all levels of medical information easily exchanged. This open, yet integrated, flow of information will be the hallmark of healthcare technology initiatives going forward.
